How Ezysplit worked this out
Each expense is shared equally by everyone who took part in it. Meera didn't ride the scooters or drink, so she was left out of the scooter rental, the petrol and the drinks. Kabir skipped parasailing, so the ₹4,500 was shared by the other three at ₹1,500 each.
Take Ravi. He paid for the scooters, the petrol and breakfast: ₹4,400. His share of everything he took part in comes to ₹8,375. He paid ₹3,975 less than his share, so that's what he owes.
Asha paid for the villa and the drinks, and Meera paid for parasailing, groceries and the cab back, so both paid more than their share and get money back. The balances always add up to zero: what Ravi and Kabir owe is exactly what Asha and Meera are owed.
Why only 3 payments?
Paying back bill by bill would mean 26 separate payments. Netting out each pair of friends still leaves six. Ezysplit works from each person's overall balance and finds the fewest payments that clear everyone: here, 3. Each payment can go straight through GPay, PhonePe or Paytm.
The guide to settling with the fewest transfers explains the method step by step.
