Splitting costs when there's a couple in the group

Per person or per household? How to keep it fair for singles and couples on the same trip.

Last updated 4 November 2026

Three singles and a couple rent a villa. Is that four shares or five? The couple shares one room, but they're two mouths at dinner. Groups fall out over this because they never say which rule they're using. Here are the rules, and when each is fair.

Rule 1: per person, always

Every bill is divided by the number of people. The couple counts as two. Simple, and clearly right for food, tickets, fuel and anything consumed per head.

It feels wrong for accommodation when the couple shares a room and the singles each have one: the couple pays twice as much for the same room.

Rule 2: per room for accommodation, per person for everything else

This is what most groups actually want. The villa or hotel cost is split by rooms (or by beds, if a single is in a twin with another single). Everything else is per person.

Example: villa ₹20,000 a night, four rooms: three singles, one couple. Per room = ₹5,000 each, so the couple pays ₹5,000 total, ₹2,500 each. Dinner for five people: ₹2,500, so ₹500 each including both halves of the couple.

Rule 3: per household

The couple is treated as one unit for everything. Fair when the couple genuinely has one budget and the group is small and relaxed about it. Unfair on big meal bills if the couple eats and drinks like two people, which they do.

Making it work in Ezysplit

Add every individual as a member, including both halves of the couple. Then:

That sounds like a lot of exclusions for a four-room villa but it is four expenses once, and then every balance is right for the whole trip. The trip checklist has more on logging as you go.

Couples settling with each other

If a couple shares money, they often don't care which of them pays. Ezysplit still shows them separately, which is correct: it means the group's maths doesn't depend on the couple's private arrangement. They can pay from one account and ignore the line between them.

Say it before the trip

"Rooms by room, everything else per person" is a single sentence. Put it in the group chat when the booking is made. The couple will usually propose it themselves if someone opens the door.

Frequently asked questions

Should a couple pay one share or two on a group trip?

Two shares for food, tickets and anything consumed per person. For accommodation, most groups split by room, so a couple sharing one room pays one room's share between them.

How do you split a villa or hotel when a couple shares a room?

Divide the cost by rooms, then split each room's cost between the people in it. With four rooms at ₹20,000 a night, each room is ₹5,000, so a couple pays ₹2,500 each and a single pays ₹5,000.

Can a couple be treated as one person in the split?

Yes, if the group agrees and the couple shares one budget. It works for small, relaxed groups but is unfair on big meal bills, because two people eat and drink like two people.
